Learning Spaces
Classrooms
Educators have always known the value of multimedia in the classroom and have readily incorporated each successive wave of multimedia technology into their pedagogy - advancing from filmstrips and overhead projectors of generations past to the latest networked 4K video and surround sound. Multimedia learning takes advantage of the brain's ability to associate verbal and visual information to promote deeper engagement and understanding. Today's students are digital natives, wired to consume information electronically. This makes multimedia AV even more attractive as a teaching tool today than it was for previous generations. Educators from K-12 to university level rely on Extron to supply state-of-the-art classroom AV technology like our workhorse WallVault® Digital, PlenumVault® Digital, and PlenumVault Direct View systems to keep multimedia content flowing to students with clarity, simplicity, and reliability.
Extron collaborated with our instructors during AV system design to understand specific uses and applications for each course. As Extron customized the AV systems, they provided training and support during and after installation. They were exemplary in follow-up as instructors began using the system verifying everything was running effectively.
The campus-wide standardization initiative focused on consistency. Instructors teach in multiple classrooms during a typical day. We want to provide them with a dependable and uniform AV experience in every room. We also leverage GlobalViewer® Enterprise to implement a strong AV management back-end to maximize AV system uptime.
We strive for simplicity, standardization, and reliability. That’s one of the reasons that we use Extron for switching, distribution, and control. We select AV suppliers based on durability, functionality, and responsive technical support. Extron has always been awesome at all three.
After two to three minutes of familiarization with the AV system, instructors say ‘Wow, that's easy!’ The systems are now in daily use. I measure success by the total lack of calls for assistance. That says it all.

Lecture Halls
Lecture halls are ideal for conducting popular classes that attract large numbers of students. Their tiered seating allows everyone to have a clear view of the lecture platform, while the AV systems amplify the lecturer's voice and display instructional material on large screens so that the instructor can be seen and heard clearly even by those in the back rows. Extron offers a variety of solutions for audio amplification, AV switching and distribution, control, as well as lecture capture and AV system resource management. These products are carefully designed to enhance learning experiences through better sound and video, reliability, and ease of control.
Whenever a request comes to connect different halls together for overflow purposes, it is easy to accommodate because every signal is already on the network with NAV® to pick up.
My long-standing experience with Extron is one factor influencing selection of Extron as an AV equipment supplier for the SET building and other campus AV upgrades. But the major technical delineators were Extron’s AV system control and remote support models, which make it extremely easy for AV professionals to design, configure, and manage complex rooms.
We can send a source from any room to any other room in the complex; the NAV® system turns the entire MECD complex into one enormous, flexible learning space.
The Surgical Education Center, its videowall, and NAV® AVoIP network tying all meeting spaces together surpassed everyone’s expectations. We couldn’t have done it without the aid of a company that was willing to embrace our design goals, train us, and support us, as Extron did.

Collaboration and Active Learning Spaces
Students today learn in collaborative and interactive ways, reflecting the teamwork‑focused nature of the modern business world. To support this shift, schools and universities are creating active learning spaces where small groups can brainstorm, exchange ideas, and complete projects. Extron offers an array of AV collaboration solutions that enable institutions to customize their learning environments. Our TeamWork collaboration switchers let students effortlessly present content from their laptops on a display with the push of a button, while our ShareLink® Pro Wired and Wireless Presentation Systems empower students and instructors to share content to any display in the room. Whatever the need, Extron provides the solutions to enhance the learning experience.
This room has acted as the College's proof of concept for moving signal and control routing to NAV® and we are already having additional spaces designed around the NAV architecture.
Extron has been the standard for AV spaces at Central Piedmont since 2012. Through standardization, we keep equipment complements consistent. That streamlines installation, AV control programming, and troubleshooting. This translates to savings in time and money. For those reasons, Extron was our choice for the Parr Center.
The IT Institute AV systems rely on Extron switching, distribution, and control. All rooms network to our GlobalViewer® Enterprise server, allowing us to monitor and control the AV systems remotely for maintenance and to help faculty operate the AV. This is very important, since we are located offsite at our main campus three miles away.

Auditoriums and Multipurpose Rooms
School auditoriums have become multifunctional performing arts showplaces with stage lifts, special effects lighting, and sophisticated AV systems. They are booked solid for school functions, community events, and teaching of on-stage talent and back-stage crafts. These facilities can be part of a planetarium where a large videowall takes audiences on virtual voyages through the galaxy. Or they can be part of a museum displaying anything from paintings to moon rocks, with multimedia-enriched presentations on flat screen displays. Events staged in these locations require the professional production values of HD-SDI video and multi-channel audio, distributed over long distances, as well as sophisticated signal processing. Extron meets these needs with XTP® and NAV® twisted pair and fiber optic switching and transmission systems, supported by powerful video scalers, videowall processors, and audio DSP processors that make auditoriums and exhibit halls come alive.
Reliability, cost, and ease of use have driven the decision for Wake Tech to select Extron as our vendor. Most of our campuses are outfitted with Extron in our academic spaces and conference rooms. The hardware can easily be maintained by our team. Additionally, the support from Extron is top notch.

HyFlex and Distance Learning
The HyFlex model enriches learning by allowing students to participate live in-person or remotely, and access on-demand content via any device. This flexibility improves learning outcomes by providing a consistent experience for both in-person and remote learners. Using collaboration and streaming technologies, schools offer real-time, interactive instruction where remote learners look and feel like they are in the room with instructors and classmates, able to watch lectures, ask questions, and contribute. For those who prefer to learn at their own pace, schools provide recorded lessons that can be streamed on-demand, thanks to high speed Internet. Schools rely on Extron's SME and VN Matrix® streaming media encoders, SMD media players, as well as turn-key solutions like the Extron SMP Series recording and streaming processors and the StudioStation® one-touch recording solution to enhance learning beyond the classroom.
Full Teams® Room solutions are rare in Singapore’s educational institutions. We broke new ground with this Teams-based HyFlex AV system design. Extron’s unwavering on-site and remote support got us through every challenge encountered. The end product is an AV system that provides Temasek Polytechnic lecturers and students with smooth, effective HyFlex teaching and learning experiences that work reliably every day.
The NAV® technology is a game changer and allows us to deliver content anywhere at any time. The AV over IP scheme is also a welcome change from the heavily used HDMI standard. You don't have to be an audiovisual expert to use Extron products and the performance has been great so far. This is the third time in my career I've worked directly with Extron's products on a project and every time has been exceptional. The design was thorough, the support has been great, and the solutions are always top-notch.
The classrooms in the Curtis Media Center are true HyFlex classrooms. Professors can use instructor reference monitors to see remote students as if they were an extension of the classroom. If students are missing class, they’ll feel more like part of the class because they are getting a two-way experience, and the professor can actually see them.
Knowledgeable, friendly support, solid reliability with long end-of-life product update cycles, and money-saving integrated solutions that pack interfacing, switching, amplification, and control into a single unit are key reasons why The Citadel has been an Extron school for a long time.

Esports
In education, esports reaches beyond traditional sports to create an all-inclusive environment where students can compete and win regardless of athletic ability. Like traditional sports, esports fosters teamwork, communication, and problem solving. Esports programs help schools recruit and retain students. By participating in school esports, students build competencies leading to careers in esports marketing, business management, game development, and graphic design. We have extensive experience helping schools design esports AV systems that meet their unique needs:
- High-resolution, ultra-low latency video signal extension, switching, and processing.
- High-power audio processed by DSP to reach the ears of audiences with exciting, engaging clarity.
- Streaming and recording for league competitions over Internet gaming platforms.
- AV control for intuitive system management.
The Value of Esports for Educational Institutions - Download PDF
Everyone involved in designing and installing the esports lounge network and AV systems came together and communicated well. CSUCI’s network team talked with Extron and learned everything they needed to do. Extron quickly diagnosed and resolved the few network issues that popped up during integration. Everything came together on the planned schedule. Everything worked great.
Throughout the rollout of the esports lab, Extron was extremely proactive in working to make the project a complete success.
Seventy-five cadets participated in the design and construction of the esports facility AV upgrade. Collaborating with Extron on the project immersed them in a technologically advanced training environment. The hands-on experience gave them a deeper understanding of the hardware and software that makes esports possible, empowering their passion for competitive gaming.
To get the esports venues up and running, we needed to create infrastructure that was cost effective and easily scalable for future growth. William Reed built the AV systems himself from spare Extron equipment that we had on hand, which ticked the box for ‘cost effective’. As the esports program grew in popularity, we upgraded to newer Extron equipment, with help from integrator Strategic Connections. That ticked the box for ‘scalable’. It’s a winning strategy for the school’s AV team as well as for the esports teams.

AV Switching and Processing
Well-designed AV switching and processing devices from Extron get your instructional content from the source to the screen simply and easily, with clear images and sound. Our switchers allow you to send video up to 4K resolution and stereo or surround audio from your laptop, your media player, or your document camera to your projector or flat panel display over short or long distances. Our video signal processors and scalers convert, reformat, and optimize incoming video allowing use of a wide range of video signal formats and resolutions, ranging from consumer grade HDMI to broadcast grade SDI. And our audio signal processors tailor audio characteristics to compensate for room acoustics and cancel-out echoes. Extron's range of AV switching and processing products range from providing turn-key AV capability for single-display classrooms to a full line of video scalers, matrix switchers, and audio matrix processors for multi-source, multi-display venues such as lecture halls, performance spaces, and libraries.
With what we do in these rooms, the AV system had to be versatile as well as easy to reconfigure. We went with the XTP system because it has the modularity, flexibility, and built‐in features we want on campus.
The XTP System serves as the heart of a complete, centralized AV system for the Mathura Road campus, and deploying the system was quick and easy. The ability to transmit AV and control signals across long distances with a single twisted pair cable greatly simplified installation, while AV functions as source switching and video collaboration are seamless and effortless.
Simulation labs are becoming a mainstay of higher learning, and the AV systems really tie it all together. Extron's fiber optics meet the exacting performance criteria and reliability requirements inherent with advanced medical training and research.
The XTP CrossPoint matrix switcher has been invaluable in solving installation and cabling problems, while also offering us the most appropriate flexibility, transmission capabilities, and expandability for Ca' Foscari University.
Extron AV Systems Facilitate Research at Leading Institute in India
IGIB wanted to upgrade its Mathura Road campus to enable teaching and information sharing within the institute, between campuses, and over the Internet through a media server. Voice Amplification and Audio
The primary mode of learning in the classroom is listening. Students listen to the teacher, and they listen to each other. Even well-designed classrooms can have acoustics that make hearing and being heard a challenge: background noise, reverberation, and long distances from speakers to listeners all contribute to the problem. When coupled with our VoiceLift Pro Microphone, Extron PlenumVault Digital, PlenumVault Direct View, or WallVault Digital systems provide a complete classroom audio solution that includes voice reinforcement. Everyone in the classroom can hear the lessons being taught, whether the source is the teacher's voice, or an AV presentation from a laptop or media player.
Another benefit is how consistently the lightweight microphones perform. Many teachers wear their VoiceLift Microphone around school all day, confident that they will operate perfectly in every classroom.
The VoiceLift system is providing benefits for both our faculty and students. Teachers say they have more energy by not having to project their voice all day and students comment that they do not have to work as hard at listening.
Teachers have found the Extron AV systems easy to use and we've seen a decrease in service calls in most rooms. They are also particularly happy with the sound quality of the new systems.
Operating under CDC protocols over the past year, use of the Extron VoiceLift Pro microphone has gone up substantially across the district. Teachers have found that when they use the microphone, they do not have to stress their voices to speak through a mask; they can speak normally and let the VoiceLift system do the work.

Collaboration and Streaming
Instruction is shifting away from lecture toward collaborative learning, where students gather in small groups to solve problems and perform tasks that begin with facts and ideas and progress to applications. Learning spaces configured into pods equipped with AV systems that allow students to easily share content from BYOD laptops, tablets, and smartphones enable collaborative learning. Students can share with their immediate group on a pod display, or the instructor can send the content from a pod to a large screen at the front of the classroom to share good ideas with the entire class. As their names imply, Extron Teamwork and ShareLink® Pro 1100 collaboration systems are specifically aimed at satisfying collaborative learning needs. Augmenting these are a variety of products to store, extend, and stream the content that collaboration spaces need to share beyond their boundaries.
Our tests with the eLink 100 extender resulted in all 15 pairs streaming video with no signal interruptions or Wi Fi overloads, and the transmissions went where they needed to go.
Learning that bridges formal and informal educational experiences is accomplished through the effective use of advanced technologies. Competency-based progressions and digital learning modalities were enabled by Extron's IN1608 presentation switcher, wireless extenders, and Pro Series control.
One of the things I like about the Extron AV system is how quickly an instructor can enter a room and be teaching with the technology. They push ON, and everything fires up. Teachers tell me they love it.
Our new environments with their high-end AV systems are agile and versatile enough to facilitate any learning style, be it individual, partnered, group, or whole class work. They spark the imagination of our students in a celebration of collaboration, thinking out loud, and top-speed problem solving.

Control Systems
The most important consideration for classroom technology is ease of use. Well designed control systems assure this by providing an intuitive user interface, flexible automated or manual configuration of all devices, and solid reliability. Keypad controllers such as Extron's MediaLink Plus are simple devices that provide functionality to operate a typical single display classroom AV system. They have an intuitive user interface consisting of a few backlit buttons and perhaps a volume control and can be set up to control multiple devices with the push of a single button. The AV system can be activated for the day's lessons as easily as turning on the lights. Their rugged construction stands up well to the rigors of daily classroom use. For more sophisticated applications, touchpanel controllers like our TouchLink Pro, coupled with control processors such our IP Link Pro, provide the advantages of a customizable graphical user interface, the ability to configure macro control functions for virtually unlimited AV system automation, and sleek aesthetics with vibrant color graphics on durable glass screens.
Whether it's combining multiple rooms for overflow or quickly setting up a videoconference or recording session for a special event, XTP Systems and the TouchLink Pro touchpanels give us a wealth of flexibility.
We needed a solution for a technology-rich Active Learning Space on campus within a reasonable budget, while maintaining a high level of functionality. Extron's XTP Systems and TouchLink touchpanels were the answer.
Our standard classroom — uses the Extron TouchLink touchpanel systems. We really like those because it gives us a lot more flexibility with the graphical user interface so we'll be able to deploy these across campus and basically give a lot more options to faculty, staff, and our end-users.
With Extron equipment, control and switching just can't get any simpler. Even my most technologically challenged faculty have no problems using it. And since the system is networked, I've saved inches of shoe leather because I'm not walking from classroom to classroom responding to calls for help.

Software and Management
Whether you are a large school district or major university with hundreds of AV-enabled instructional spaces, or a rural K-12 campus with a few single-projector classrooms, managing the efficiency of your AV assets can minimize costs and maximize utilization. Extron GlobalViewer Enterprise provides centralized control, monitoring, and usage metrics for AV systems over the network, allowing a single help desk to monitor performance of AV system components, provide remote support to users, and generate metrics for budget and maintenance planning. GlobalViewer Enterprise comes bundled with our GlobalViewer Campus Communications Suite. GVCCS is the modern, simple way to implement bells, public address announcements, and intercom communications throughout campus over the network from an intuitive web browser interface. And to simplify booking of heavily used instructional spaces, schools turn to the Extron room scheduling system. Our sleek Touchlink scheduling panels connect directly to popular scheduling apps including Microsoft® Exchange, Google Calendar, and 25Live. A couple of screen taps or keystrokes are all it takes to make on-demand or pre-scheduled reservations from the touchpanels, computers, tablets or smartphones. Facility administrators can use occupancy statistics provided by the system to gauge room usage and plan accordingly. All this, with no annual subscription fee.
You can have a collaborative learning environment in a square room, as long as the technology supports one-on-one instruction and is intuitive to use. Extron's IN1608, wireless extender, and Pro Series control systems with mirrored control through their app provide what the Logan city School District wanted for their 21st century style of learning engagement.
The instructors appreciate how easy it is to switch between their own sources and to display material from a student's laptop using the Extron control system.
Extron control systems are our university standard, and integrating Dineen Hall's control system into our existing GVE system was as fast and easy as we had anticipated.
Extron GC Pro, GUI Designer, and Toolbelt software made customization of the different instructional spaces a very streamlined process. Also, iGVE lets the Mt. SAC team easily monitor, manage, and provide assistance on the BCT AV systems from anywhere on campus.
